Minor White reviews William Klein’s New York (1957)
Check out White’s scathing review.
Here is a taste
Minor White, “Though similarities exist, Klein’s book is not a sociological document such as Hine’s Ellis Island. A different age, a different period is only part of the difference. Actually Klein did not photograph a city; he matched with cheap sensational photography the vulgarity of life in all its ugliness.
As Rernard Rerenson, eminent art critic, would object, this book has no “life enhancing” qualities.”
I wonder if I’m not making my mentors and teachers uncomfortable if I’m not doing something wrong. I mean what’s the point of re-doing what came before you? The adulation and acceptance may happen now but what if that is not pushing forward or giving something new and fresh to the world. Who will be talking about this in 40 years…..
Oh well, I guess I wouldn’t upset the people who’s opinions matter to me anyway.
